A Prayer For The Living? #Oasis

I’m sure like me,  you have many songs that take you back to people and places in your life,  happy times,  sad times,  the best and worst of times.   Moments that we treasure and wish that we could live again and moments that we wish we could forget.

Sometimes,  years after the event,  we are getting on with our day,  the radio on in the background and a song comes on that reminds us of happy times,  it makes us feel good and we smile at the memories that come flooding back.

Sometimes,  it’s the opposite,  a song that reminds us of sad times.  That takes our breath away and puts a tear in our eyes. Continue reading “A Prayer For The Living? #Oasis”

A bit fit? #fitbit

So ..  it was my birthday last week.  My kids bought me a Fitbit Blaze   Basically a smart watch which monitors various aspects of your health and wellbeing.

I’ve got to tell you I was somewhat cynical to the claims made in its reviews of accuracy and functionality.

But hey I was born cynical!
However ..  I’m happy to report that after a week of wearing my device, it’s my new favourite toy.

I’ve found that it accurately monitors the number of steps, floors climbed, daily exercise routine or a lack of.

A personal highlight is that it produces an accurate assessment of my sleep pattern.  See screenshot above.

My sleep pattern is pretty awful, prior to starting this new job I’d be up until 1am most nights or sleeping at 10 then awake at 4.     That may still be the case as I need to start waking up at 630 and out at 730am and have been tired most nights.

But this records the sleep I’m getting.   Friday night and I’m out at 1030 and get over 7 hours sleep.  I’m amazed at that.

The best thing I’ve found though is that the Fitbit isn’t just a monitoring tool but is also a motivational tool.  Continue reading “A bit fit? #fitbit”

Changing The Future For The Better?

img_6430

A friend of mine was recently telling me about the depression he suffers,   how it is always there even when he puts a brave face on it.

I would never judge him,  how someone feels is how they feel .. they can’t help that, even if things are better than they percieve,   it’s a mind-set and difficult to break out of.

It’s too simple to say to someone that they need to look around and appreciate how lucky they are .. good home,  great job,  a decent regular income.

I Just Called To Say I Love You?

I’m a big Stevie Wonder fan .. If tunes like Superstition,  I Wish,  Sir Duke,  Living For The City etc don’t make you want to dance thee is something wrong with you.

I particularly love I Wish, its a different more upbeat slant on the song Dance With My Father .. which I also love.    Stevie sings of his mum keeping him right,  greeting him at the back-door to tell him the difference between wrong and right and for me it brings back memories when I used to hang about with those “hoodlum friends of mine”.

I was listening to all of these songs while getting ready for work and on my train journey this morning.

I work in a busy open-plan office,   having headphones on helps block out the background noise of other peoples conversations and helps you focus on the task at hand .. even if your head is bopping along to the music.

It’s the pulse .. it flows in us .. music is always playing in my head.

Better that than hearing voices!  🙂

When the pulse stops,  the dance is over and we die .. thats it.

So I’m sitting there listening to Steve Wright on Radio 2 .. and someone is picking the music of their lifetime .. a bit of Stevie coming up fantastic!

But then .. of all the choices they choose .. I Just Called To Say I Love You.

Now I don’t know about you,  but it has to be one of the worst pop songs ever,  sickly scmaltzy and almost gives me the boke.

Now compare that with the song As from his album Songs in The Key Of Life.

Now theres a tune and a lyric which conveys the emotion of being in love without the need for a sick-bag.

I even love the version by George Michael and Mary J Blige,  noted for its video which was avant-garde in its use of computer controlled cameras and overlaid video.

Until the rainbow burns the starts out of the sky
Until the ocean covers every mountain high

Always!

Why does “Over The Rainbow” make me cry too?

Its funny how sometimes you write things that are not very well read ..

( Some might say not very well written .. Ed! )

Shut-up Ed .. who asked you anyway?!  🙂

The point being that I write just whatever I feel,  family,  football,  friends,  random thoughts.

Music is a big part of my life,  one of my most read pages is about the song Over The Rainbow and why I think that it has such an emotional impact on people.

Definitely one of my 3 funeral songs.

Originally blog with musical analysis below

Why Does Over The Rainbow Make Me Cry?

But decided to record and add my version to soundcloud,  link below.

Sing with me ..

Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
There’s a land that I heard of once,  once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true

Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow. Why, oh why? can’t I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Above the rainbow why, oh, why can’t I?

Eight From The Eighties – Day 3

IMG_0609
Day 3 of my 8 songs from the 80s as nominated by Alan.

In 1984, I was a daft boy ( what’s changed??!! 🙂 ) working in the shipyards in Govan, Glasgow.

But there was no work.

So they transferred a few hundred workers of various trades to work at Swan Hunters shipyard in Newcastle.

I spent the whole of 84 working in Newcastle on the Ark Royal aircraft carrier and a replacement for the Atlantic Conveyor container ship which had been requisitioned by the government to carry troops and equipment to the Falklands war where it was destroyed by two Exocet missiles

We were all put up in cheap hotels and B&Bs in Whitley Bay, out of season and freezing cold with the winds coming off the North Sea.

There were wild times on the weekends we stayed down, the bars in the hotels were open all night for us residents and some guys made full use of it. Some went over the top by distracting the night porter so that others could raid the bar.

The place I stayed in had a couple of bars and this song was popular then, the bar full of people singing its anthemic chorus, but nobody really knew who Nelson Mandela was.

I believe in his quote in the image above that education changes the world both globally and personally.

Education freed him,  education freed me from shipbuilding and a cycle of boom and burst and living just above poverty.

I think this song is the proof that music raises public awareness and that changes the world.

Just as well it was a catchy tune or Nelson might have stayed locked up! 🙂

Happy Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day to you whether you’re in a relationship or not.

If you’re in a relationship and you’re happy then you’re lucky.  Stay with it, cherish it,  do something random to make  them feel special and not just today.

If you’re single and happy then more power to you.  Sometimes it takes strength to fly solo.

If you’re single and looking then good luck,  but you need to buy a ticket to win the lottery.   So think positive and get back in the game.

If you’re in a relationship and unhappy. .. time to change it.   Change can be painful all that emotional and financial heartache but there’s a brighter future on the distant horizon.  You need to stay focussed on that when the pain gets too much.

Sometimes you really are better off alone.
