You know what Tourettes Syndrome (TS) is .. right?
Well maybe you don’t know the detail of this neuropsychiatric disorder.
But like me, you probably think of those poor individuals who can’t help utter random expletives at random moments. However in fact, these symptoms only affect a small number of cases and TS is more likely to be symptomised by tic’s or OCD or other random behaviour.
However the diagnosis of Tourettes is complex as these symptoms may be associated with other conditions and not TS related.
For the majority of us, TS is when someone opens their gob in public and says something entirely inappropriate and carries on as if nothing happened.
I do it all the time.
Yeah fuck off .. I call it stress-related Tourettes and it normally occurs when I’m driving and some lovely person has cut me up or in some other stress related situation.
I’m sure you’ve been there.
But being serious .. I think what most of us perceive as TS is a dysfunction between the mind thinking something and the mouth vocalising it without a controlling edit system that prevents you saying something inappropriate.
So what is the opposite of Tourettes?
It seems to me that this edit function is often missing on the input side of our cognitive systems and allows the weak of mind to accept urban legend as genuine without passing it through any questions of validity. They then pass this on as fact.
Take the following example passed on by a friend, I mean how stupid do you have to be to take everything on Facebook at face-value and pass it on without actually questioning the credibility of the post?
Time-wasting stupid Asssss-hoooooles!
